Youthful indiscretion can have long-lasting effects

The half-hour drive from Benton northwest to Paducah is one many of us have made many times. It’s there in Paducah that a young man faces serious charges after allegedly using social media to try to sell a prescription medicine.

Police say the 19-year-old posted on an unnamed social media site a photo of a bottle of Promethazine — a sedating medication used on pre- and post-operative patients — and stated that it was for sale. He has been charged with trafficking a legend drug.

What is a legend drug? According to Kentucky law, it’s any prescription medication bearing the following warning on its label: “Caution: Federal law prohibits dispensing without prescription.” Promethazine is prescribed not only for post-operative pain, but also to control allergy-related coughs, as well as motion sickness, according to MedlinePlus.com.

A TV station report states that law enforcement officials talked to a pharmacy employee who told them that the medication had been delivered to a relative of the suspect. She then told an officer that the medicine had gone missing after the suspect paid her a visit.

In similar situations, young people face serious consequences that can include incarceration, fines and perhaps worst of all, a criminal record that can haunt them later in life. Dealing with these criminal charges effectively is crucial, which is why many concerned parents will sit down with an experienced criminal defense attorney who can help them understand the available legal options and do all they can to protect their loved one.
